Bail plea in Jessica case referred to Division Bench

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday referred an anticipatory bail application by a Chandigarh-based doctor, who had allegedly issued a fake medical certificate to an accused in the Jessica Lal murder case, to a Division Bench hearing the Delhi police's appeal against acquittals in the case.

Vacation Judge Justice Mukul Mudgal refused to pass any order on his application saying that he was referring it to the Division Bench which was seized of the appeal in the case.

On the direction of the High Court, the police have registered a case against the doctor for allegedly issuing a fake certificate to the accused, Vikas Gill, which the latter had used to secure personal exemption from court during trial of the case. The alleged culpability of the doctor, J.S. Bedi, had come to light in April this year when the police submitted in the Court that Gill, who was tried and acquitted along with eight other accused in the case, had left the country without permission of the court.
