NEW DELHI: At least a dozen Nepali migrant groups held a demonstration at Jantar Mantar here on Friday demanding immediate release of nearly 50 Nepal Maoist activists, including some senior leaders, lodged in various Indian jails. A large number of Nepali migrants gathered at the venue in the afternoon shouting slogans in support of the Maoist movement and demanding release of their jailed leaders in India besides asking the Indian Government to give information about prisoners who had "disappeared" while in custody. The protest also marked the worldwide "International Day of Protests". The Nepali migrant organisations which took part in the protest included Nepali Janadhikar Suraksha Samiti, Pravasi Nepali Sangh Bharat, Nepali Jansampark Samiti and Nepali Loktantrik Andolan Sahayog Samiti. Addressing the protesters, Nepali Janadhikar Suraksha Samiti of India's central committee president Laxman Pant said when the new Nepali Government had officially withdrawn "red corner" notices against the leaders and activists of the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) and released most of them, those lodged in jails of other countries should also be released immediately. Demanding release of two prominent CPN-M leaders, Mohan Baidya (Comrade Kiran) and C. P. Gajurel (Comrade Gaurav), Mr. Pant said: "As per the historic eight-point agreement, CPN-M has decided to join the interim government in Nepal along with other parties where both the jailed senior leaders are expected to play a crucial role. Therefore they should be freed immediately."
