NEW DELHI: Asserting that the Congress will receive a drubbing in the upcoming July 23 by-election for the Subhash Nagar municipal seat, Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan has said the outcome of the election will be a referendum on the performance and rule of the Congress-led Government in Delhi. In a statement here on Friday, Dr. Vardhan said the by-election would expose the waning popularity and declining credibility of the Congress party and the Government led by it in Delhi as well in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Claiming that the BJP would win the Subhash Nagar seat comfortably, Dr. Vardhan said strong resentment prevailed among the public against the Delhi Government as well as the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre over their failure to check the rising prices of essential commodities. He further alleged that both the government had failed to take action against hoarders and black-marketers, leading to the present situation. The BJP leader said the outcome of the by-election would be the beginning of the end of Congress rule in Delhi. Accusing the Congress of trying every trick in the bag to delay the by-election for the Subhash Nagar seat, Dr. Vardhan said the party was fearing a backlash from voters because of its failure to rein in the prices of essential commodities including diesel and petrol. The BJP candidate for the Subhash Nagar seat, Meira Kanwaria, said that the Congress had won the previous by-election by indulging in wrong practices which was why its sitting Councillor had been disqualified by the Supreme Court.
