Chief Minister thanks Prime Minister

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi for the Centre's decision to approve the Rs.1,553 crore expansion plan of Salem Steel Plant.

In a statement here, he said the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) had raised its voice, besides striving hard at different periods for the setting up of the plant and its growth. The party had been consistently urging the Centre to convert the rolling plant into a steel smelting plant, he added.

The DMK stoutly protested the previous National Democratic Alliance Government's attempt to privatise the plant and stalled the move, Mr. Karunanidhi recalled.
