CHENNAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation will file a charge sheet in a corruption case against former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in a special court here, after the Speaker's permission to prosecute her is received.
Collection of evidence
Collection of evidence in the case, relating to Ms. Jayalalithaa allegedly receiving demand drafts and Rs.2 crore in cash on her birthday in 1992, is over. Documents have been sent to the Speaker seeking permission to prosecute under section 11 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The draft charge sheet is almost ready and once the nod is obtained, the agency will be able to file the charge sheet within a week, sources said. The case was taken over by the CBI in 1996 initially for investigating an alleged offence of criminal misconduct by a public servant relating to gifts allegedly received by her, which she had disclosed in her income tax returns. The investigators mainly probed receipt of gifts by her in the form of demand drafts, including those for $3 lakh. However, the CBI did not recommend any action on the allegation relating to receipt of dollars, as there was no material to establish that she had abused her official position as Chief Minister.
