Srinagar: A senior Army officer and 14 militants, including eight intruders, were killed on Friday in separate encounters in Jammu and Kashmir, where security forces averted an attack on people taking part in the Amarnath pilgrimage by defusing three IEDs planted by militants on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. Lt. Col. V.R. Chauhan and three militants were killed and a jawan injured in an encounter at Bandipora in Baramulla district, General Officer Commanding Kilo Force Maj. Gen. N.R. Singh told reporters here. However, residents of the north Kashmir town staged a demonstration claiming that two of the deceased were civilians. A joint operation of Army and the BSF was launched on a suspected house in the town in the morning and after breaking a false ceiling, they found militants hiding inside and in the gunbattle Lt. Col. Chauhan killed two militants but was fatally injured in the encounter, the officer said. He denied reports that the officer was taken hostage and later killed by militants during the operation. PTI
