CHENNAI : Mettur reservoir has started getting good inflow from Saturday, thanks to torrential rains in the catchment areas of the Cauvery and heavy release of water from the Kabini reservoir. Inflow in the reservoir, which was a few thousand cusecs till Friday, increased to 7,000 cusecs on Saturday afternoon. It may cross 20,000 cusecs by Sunday and 35,000 cusecs by Monday. According to a report from Mysore, the storage at the Kabini reservoir has reached its capacity and authorities are resorting to heavy discharge from the reservoir. Against an inflow of 30,9861 cusecs, about 36,621 cusecs was released. As the entire discharge from Kabini would reach Mettur reservoir only, the receipts would be heavy in the days to come, officials here said. The Cauvery delta farmers need not have any apprehension this year over the availability of water for the kuruvai cultivation, as they are likely to get continuous supply till harvest. The current storage at the reservoir was 68.585 thousand million cubic (TMC) feet against the capacity of 93.4 tmcft. The outflow from the reservoir is being maintained at 13,020 cusecs. Meanwhile, kuruvai operations are in full swing in the composite Thanjavur district. In the current season, the normal coverage of 2.074 lakh hectares is likely to be exceeded at least by 50,000 hectares, the officials added.
