CHENNAI: The State Government will take over the copyrights of the works by freedom fighter M.P. Sivagnanam, popularly known as Ma.Po.Si, and will pay Rs. 20 lakh to his family, said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi here on Saturday. He had written over 100 books.

Participating in the centenary celebrations of Sivagnanam, the Chief Minister said a commemorative stamp would be released in honour of the freedom fighter on August 15 and a statue would be installed in Chennai.

The Chief Minister said Tamils were indebted to him as it was through his efforts the State could retain Chennai and got Tiruttani from Andhra Pradesh. Though he was a nationalist, he always associated himself with Dravidian parties in their fight for the rights of Tamils, he added.

Former Minister K. Rajaram said that though Ma.Po.Si and Annadurai differed on various issues they were together in protecting the interests of Tamil Nadu.

Industrialist M.A.M. Ramaswamy, who presided, described Ma.Po.Si as a man of principles. He was a national asset, who fought for the country's freedom.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy, M.G.R. Kazhagam president Rm. Veerappan and industrialist N. Mahalingam were among those who recalled the services rendered by the leader.
