PANIC: People run for cover as the body of a youth killed on Friday, lies on the road during his funeral procession in Srinagar on Saturday.

SRINAGAR: Fourteen persons, including eight policemen, were injured in protests that broke out across Srinagar on Saturday, following the killing of a man by CRPF personnel on Friday night.

Protesters damaged police bunkers, Government hoardings, Manmohan-Musharraf friendship signboards and windowpanes of public vehicles. Police later resorted to cane-charge and fired teargas shells to disperse the protesters.

Central Reserve Police Force personnel of the 46 Battalion, staying in a hotel at Khanyar, shot dead Inayatullah Bhat (31), at 2150 hours on Friday outside his home and bakery, Bake Way Bakers, residents said.

His friend Fayaz Ahmad said Bhat was taking his evening walk "and while ambling along near his shop, he was shot dead by the forces without any rhyme or reason." He succumbed to his injuries at Soura SKIMS Hospital.

CRPF spokesman Dalip Singh Ambesh said the personnel at the hotel fired at Bhat when he ignored repeated calls to stop.

When news of his death spread on Saturday morning, 3,000 to 4,000 protesters marched through the streets of Srinagar, carrying Bhat's body on a stretcher.
