Package totally inadequate: BJP
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday said the relief package announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for Vidharbha farmers was totally "inadequate" and did not address the "main problem".
"He has given a temporary dose instead of a permanent solution," party spokesman Prakash Javadekar said in a statement here. Large-scale suicides were occurring because the terms of trade had gone against farmers in the recent years. The reduction of duty on cotton by the United Progressive Alliance boosted imports and suppressed internal prices. Thus the crop became unremunerative for farmers, Mr. Javadekar said.
"Silent on jobs"
The Prime Minister only marginally addressed the problem of indebtedness, which was the symptom of a large agrarian crisis, the BJP said. Dr. Singh did not address BT cotton seed-related problems. "He is silent on employment opportunity and total debt redemption for families of farmers who have committed suicide."
