New Vice-Chairman for UGC

NEW DELHI: Mool Chand Sharma has been appointed the new Vice-Chairman of the University Grants Commission. His appointment is for three years or until he attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.

Prof. Sharma earlier held the post of Secretary in the University Grants Commission. He has also served as Director of the National Law Institute University in Bhopal.

PNB raises interest rates

NEW DELHI: Punjab National Bank has raised its interest rates on domestic term deposits from July 1. This is the second increase announced by the bank since May 1.

For maturity periods of three to five years, PNB now offers an annualised yield at the beginning of the slab at 7.71 per cent as against 7.41 per cent earlier. It has raised the interest rate by 25 basis points for term deposits below Rs.15 lakhs with maturity periods ranging from 180 days to less than five years. On term deposits of Rs.15 lakhs to below Rs.5 crore, the rate of interest is up by 25 basis points in between the maturity slabs from two to ten years.

Gymnasium dedicated

NEW DELHI: The Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Jai Kishan Sharma, on Saturday dedicated the redeveloped gymnasium at East Rohtak Nagar in the trans-Yamuna area to the citizens.

Mr. Sharma said the new Master Plan for Delhi to be introduced soon would bring relief to citizens. He said the party was dedicated to the service of the citizens and warned that no laxity or dereliction of duty by civic employees would be tolerated.

Rally planned

NEW DELHI: The National Akali Dal (NAD) will hold a demonstration at Gole Market here on Sunday to protest against increases in the prices of essential commodities.

In a statement, NAD president Paramjeet Singh Pamma said: "The Government has completely let down the common man as it has not been able to control the rising prices.'' Gole Market, the venue of the protest, is the constituency of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Frankfurt book fair

New Delhi: About 200 Indian publishers will take part in the prestigious Frankfurt book fair in October where the country has been invited as the Guest of Honour in recognition of its rich and vibrant literary culture.

NEW DELHI: A two-day "Vyasa Purnima" organised by Sri Yog Vedant Sewa Samiti Delhi began at Japanese Park in Rohini Sector-10 here on Saturday.
