NEW DELHI: Delhi Public Works Department Minister A. K. Walia on Friday visited waterlogging-prone areas of the Capital along with senior engineers and officials of various civic agencies. Dr. Walia began his visit from near the Delhi Police headquarters that had become waterlogged during the heavy downpour this past Tuesday due to damage to the drainage system caused by road-cutting and laying of cables by Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited. He instructed the PWD engineers to undertaking necessary repairs and set things right. The Minister also visited Tilak Bridge, Bhairon Marg and Hanuman Mandir to supervise the arrangements made for the monsoon. He directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's Department of Environment Management Services to undertake de-silting of drains immediately. The PWD engineer-in-chief was also directed to issue instructions to all agencies undertaking road-cutting to take precautions and ensure that utility lines were not affected. He said agencies found to be damaging utility lines would not be given permission to undertake road-cutting in the future. Dr. Walia also instructed the Delhi Jal Board to take urgent remedial steps to avoid recurrence of waterlogging. At Model Town, which was the scene of large-scale waterlogging, the Minister was told that the authority concerned was cleaning the drain. As the road has been handed over to the Metro Rail, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has been instructed to maintain a constant liaison with PWD and MCD. The Minister instructed MCD to implement its Rs. 18-crore mega-scheme to tackle the problem of waterlogging in Model Town.
