NEW DELHI: Northern Railway on Saturday announced the introduction of 19 new trains, extension of the routes of 11 others and an increase in the frequency of five more. Releasing its new time-table effective from July 1, Northern Railway Chief Passenger Traffic Manager S.Ansari said the journey time of 49 express and 21 passenger trains had also been reduced. While the tri-weekly Rae Bareli-Delhi-Rae Bareli Express will be introduced from Sunday, the dates for the Garib Rath Express trains from Hazrat Nizamuddin here to Bandra, Patna and Chennai will be announced soon. Trains whose routes are scheduled to be extended include Hirakud Express between Visakhapatnam and Nizamuddin that will be extended to Amritsar and Delhi Junction-Meerut City train will be extended to Muzaffarnagar. The Taj Express from Nizamuddin to Gwalior has been extended to Jhansi from Saturday, while the Ahmedabad-Delhi Mail will be extended to Hardwar from July 14. The Chennai-Dehra Dun/Chandigarh Express has been diverted to run via Hazrat Nizamuddin-Ghaziabad instead of New Delhi. Northern Railway has also re-scheduled 12 trains, including the Mumbai Rajdhani and Dakshin Express. "Every year Indian Railways adds new trains and re-schedules the timings of existing ones in response to public demand. A lot of time goes into the introduction and rescheduling of trains, as the entire time-table needs to be altered. Entry and exit platforms need to be earmarked, while at the same time tracks need to be kept at optimum condition. Northern Railway needs to keep constant vigil in the maintenance of New Delhi railway station, which sees close to 300 trains daily. At the same time, Northern Railway also needs to re-schedule train timings keeping passenger convenience in mind,'' said Mr. Ansari at a press conference. Adding that the next revised time-table would be even more convenient for passengers, Mr. Ansari said: "Northern Railway will introduce a new time-table on December 1 that will take at least two months of planning. The present time-tables are modifications of existing train schedules to make way for the introduction of new trains, but it does not cut down on journey time for passengers as much as it should. What is required is a complete revamping of the schedules of all trains. Keeping passenger conveniences and operational feasibility in mind, the timetable to be introduced in December will herald a complete change for the Railways.''
