Government schools warned

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government has advised schools in the State not to give harsh punishments to pupils. This comes in the wake of a Headmistress of a private primary school in Tiruvallur district asking pupils to kneel down. The boys and girls had been criss-crossing the Tiruvallur-Periyapalayam highway and the punishment was awarded to instil discipline in them so that they would not get involved in accidents. Instructions had been given to the school management through the authorities concerned to take suitable action against the Headmistress. This should serve as a warning to other institutions to avoid inflicting harsh punishments on children, an official release said.
