CHENNAI: Teachers from 75 schools in the State attended a workshop on Tamil computing here on Saturday morning. Organised by the Kanithamizh Sangam, the workshop introduced teachers to developments in Tamil computing, Tamil typing and various software that serve as teaching and learning aids. An exhibition of computing products would be on for the next ten days at Chettiar Hall on TTK Road, Alwarpet. Lack of English knowledge need not hamper access to computers and the Internet, several speakers said. Tamil computing software and techniques were evolving to make Tamil literacy sufficient to work on computers. Working on Tamil software was becoming easier thanks to standardisation of fonts in software produced by different organisations and of typing modes across the typewriter and computer.
Teachers given package
All participating schools were given a package of CDs with Tamil language tutorials, fonts, word processor, spell check, typing tutor, optical character recognition and multimedia. M. Rajendran, Tamil Development Department, inaugurated the workshop. V. Jeyadevan, head of the Tamil department, Madras University, and V. Sankaranarayanan, director, Tamil Virtual University, participated. The organisers' website is www.kanithamizh.in
