CHENNAI: The former president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), G. Sitharaman, on Saturday urged the upcoming chartered accountants to preserve the reputation of the profession for which their seniors endeavoured. Calling the professionals to live up to the expectations of society, he stressed the need for them to work with integrity. Mr. Sitharaman was addressing a meeting organised here by the Southern India Regional Council of the Institute on the occasion of the Chartered Accountants Day. Regretting that not many junior members were present "on the pleasant occasion," he said it was due to the hard work of the seniors that today's professionals were reaping the benefits. From 400 chartered accountants when the institute was formed in 1949, the number of professionals now stood at over one lakh. Led by SIRC-ICAI chairman M. Kandasami, a few past and present leaders of the institute addressed the meeting, in which senior members of the profession and founder members of the institute were honoured. A cultural programme was also organised.
