Criminal gunned down in encounter

    NEW DELHI: A criminal carrying a reward of Rs. 20,000 on his head was gunned down in an encounter with a joint team of the Special Cell of the Delhi police and their Noida counterparts on Saturday. The police claim to have recovered a .30 bore firearm from his possession.

    Two of his accomplices were arrested earlier in the day.

    Around 7-30 p.m., the joint team tried to intercept a Maruti Wagon-R in which the suspect was travelling at Noida Sector 83, when the occupant allegedly opened fire.In retaliatory action, he sustained bullet injuries and was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

    The deceased was identified as Dinesh Giri, who was involved in 34 criminal cases.

    He was recently booked for land grabbing and extortion. The operation was carried out following disclosures made by two of his accomplices.
