BANGALORE: The chairmen of the two committees, constituted by the State Government to monitor the fee structure and admission procedure in private professional colleges resigned on Saturday. A one-man committee is likely to charge shortly. The fee fixation committee was headed by H. Rangavittalachar, while the committee to oversee admission of students to private professional colleges was headed by S. Venkataraman. Both the committees were constituted in 2003 following a Supreme Court judgment. They were reconstituted again in May this year after the State Government enacted a law to monitor the admission of students and fee charged by private professional colleges. Both Mr. Rangavittalachar and Mr. Venkataraman had been retained. The continuation of both the committees became untenable when the Karnataka Government on Friday brought in a new law to keep in abeyance the old education Act. Since the new Act also envisaged the constitution of a one-man committee the fee committee and admission committee had to go. Both Mr. Rangavittalachar and Mr. Venkataraman decided to resign on Saturday, as they did not want to continue in the post any further. Sources in the State Government told The Hindu that the former Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University M.S. Thimmappa would take over as chairman of the one-man committee. This committee is expected to monitor the implementation of the agreement reached between the Government and managements of private professional colleges. The sources said a meeting of the committee set up by the Government to go into the admission and fee structure would meet on Sunday to decide on signing the agreement as the CET counselling was scheduled to commence on Monday. This was decided at the meeting of the committee held on Saturday. With the agreement in place, there is not going to be any change in either the fee structure or admission announced by the Government on Friday.
