Laudable

The altruistic act of Warren Buffet truly deserves approbation (editorial "The power of philanthropy," June 30). Fortunes become meaningful only when they are used for the good of others. The attitude of people such as Mr. Buffet and Bill Gates challenges us to shed our avaricious nature and donate for the betterment of the world around us.

Mr. Buffet's magnanimous decision to commit the bulk of his huge fortune to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is laudable.

We Indians can only hope that the art of giving, which was once the cornerstone of our culture, becomes contagious and some of our own billionaires start giving away at least a part of their wealth for the betterment of society.

Sannapareddy Krishna Reddy,
Nellore, A.P.

Indian business magnates should take a cue from the richest and the second richest men in the world. They should directly or indirectly participate in programmes supporting the poor.

In a world where people are running after money and fame, it is heartening to learn that Mr. Buffet has joined the philanthropic mission of Mr. Gates. Their actions should inspire Indian entrepreneurs too.

Instead of passing on their entire fortunes to their heirs, they can set aside a portion for philanthropy.

Aswini Kapuganti,
Visakhapatnam, A.P.
