MYSORE: Journalists' Day in Mysore saw the participation of more than 20 destitute children in a painting competition organised in memory of Rafiq Uppinangadi, a city-based journalist who passed away last month.

Inspired by Uppinangadi's concern for destitute people, the Mysore District Journalists' Association (MDJA) organised a painting competition for destitute children on its premises on Sunday to mark Journalists' Day.

The children of Asha Kirana orphanage in the city, who had brought their colours, were provided with paper and pencils by the organisers.

The children, studying in various Government schools, were in the age group of seven to 14 years.

Rafiq Uppinangadi, who died of cancer, had adopted a girl child found abandoned in the city bus stand six years ago. "

Uppinangadi had brought up the child as his own, taking care of all her needs," MDJA president Prasanna Kumar said.

Annual event

The MDJA will make the painting competition for destitute children an annual event during Journalists' Day celebrations in memory of the late Uppinangadi.

Prizes will be given for the three best paintings at a function.

The MDJA organised an English essay competition in memory of journalist the late Bharath Kumar on Sunday.

Students from various High schools in Mysore and Nanjangud participated in the essay competition on "Role of media in development."

The first three best essays will receive prizes at a function later this month.
