Gulbarga University Vice-Chancellor B.G. Moolimani
Bidar: Basavaraj Gundappa Moolimani was a bright student with big dreams. He obtained a seat in a science college, but had no money for the fees. His father, who worked in a clothing store in Humnabad, could not bear to see his son crying because he could not afford to go to college. One day, the father came home and told Basavaraj that the fees had been paid and he could start going to college the next day. It was only later that Basavaraj learned that his father had sold his house to send him to college. Today, with a doctorate and many international honours, Dr. B.G. Moolimani has become the Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University, the first person from Bidar district to be appointed to the prestigious post. Dr. Moolimani completed his primary and secondary education in Humnabad. He stood fifth in the State in the tenth standard board examination in 1962. He obtained first rank in Karnatak University in B.Sc. (physics) in 1966. He passed his M.Sc. in nuclear science with distinction in 1968. He obtained a doctorate for his thesis on solid-state physics from McGill University in Canada. He has taught 38 batches of postgraduate students in Karnatak University. He served as head of the Physics and Electronics Department and was a member of the university's Syndicate. He also worked as a member of the University Grants Commission. He received the Commonwealth Award for excellence in science education. He is an inspiration to the youth of the Hyderabad Karnataka region, which remains educationally backward. His friends and acquaintances recall him as a warm-hearted and studious boy. "We are happy that someone from a very humble beginning has been appointed to a respected position," said his classmate Premkumar Chidri of Humnabad.
Self-made man
Long-time friend Mallanna Bhavi said Dr. Moolimani was a self-made man. "We are happy the Government had recognised his worth," he said. Suryakanth Chidri and Sharanappa Bhavi said the sacrifice made by Dr. Moolimani's father had not been in vain. Young boys and girls could draw lessons from Dr. Moolimani's life, they added.
