Kozhikode: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala has alleged that unions affiliated to Left parties are propagating that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre is taking decisions detrimental to the interests of employees in the insurance sector. Inaugurating the 22nd annual conference of the Kozhikode division of the National Life Insurance Employees' Association (NLIEA), affiliated to the Indian National Trade Union Congress, here on Sunday, Mr. Chennithala said unleashing such propaganda would not augur well for the public insurance sector. The Centre had reiterated that no steps infringing upon the rights of the employees of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India would be taken. Only 26 per cent foreign direct investment had been allowed for private insurance companies. Control of private insurance companies was vested with the Government. Privatisation in the insurance sector had been permitted considering various factors such as the changes taking place globally in this service sector, he said. The Public Undertakings Committee of Parliament, of which he was member, had asked the Centre to take steps to protect the rights of the LIC employees while going ahead with privatisation, he added. K. Anandan Nair, president of the association, presided over the inaugural function. KPCC vice- president Mullapally Ramachandran; District Congress Committee president M. Veerankutty; and All- India National Life Insurance Employees Federation general secretary V.K. Sharma offered felicitations. Mr. Anandan Nair and P. Surendranath were elected president and general secretary, respectively, of the association's Kozhikode division at a delegates' meeting.
