Leukaemia drains finances of family

Sai Patel

Hyderabad: They never thought their child would end up with a serious illness.

Yet, at the age of nine Sai Patel has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, a disease of white blood cells.

During the last three months he has lost his hair and nails due to administration of chemotherapy drugs.

Having spent Rs. 6 lakhs, Kamala Manohar and Sujata do not know how to carry on their son's treatment which requires between Rs. 15 to Rs. 20 lakhs.

Mr. Manohar, who works in a private firm, is totally broke.

"We have sold our entire property kept for the marriage our daughter. Now we require Rs. 10 lakhs for bone marrow transplantation," the worried parents told presspersons here on Saturday.

A cloth tied to his mouth, little Sai was also present at the news conference.

The harried parents urged philanthropists to contribute for the treatment of their child.

They had also applied for help from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

But for diseases like leukaemia the Government did not advance more than Rs. 50,000, Mr. Manohar said.

He said his son was admitted at CMC Vellore for last three months. The doctors had advised bone marrow transplant to check the progression of the disease.

For this he required at least Rs. 10 lakhs.

He appealed to people to help out with contributions.

Manohar can be reached on phone 93955-55564 or 93999-99854.
