This Day That Age
Britain has agreed in principle to withdraw her bases from Ceylon. The island's Prime Minister, Mr. Solomon Bandaranaike, now in London for the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Conference, told a press conference on July 2 that a joint Anglo-Ceylon statement in this regard would be issued before he returned home next week. The Socialist leader has been discussing the bases question with British Ministers, arguing that the naval base at Trincomalee and the air base at Katunayake "fundamentally conflict" with his Government's policy. He said Ceylon wanted to keep clear of the power blocs. Mr. Bandaranaike, however, added that "certain facilities" for Britain as "mutually agreed on by us" could be worked out.
