Marithibbe Gowda pledges support to the Congress's agitation on the issue

HASSAN: Expressing his discontent over the passing of Karnataka Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admissions and Fixation of Fee) Special Provisions Bill 2006, the newly elected MLC from South Teachers' Constituency, Marithibbe Gowda said here on Sunday that the Bill was detrimental to the prospects of rural students and it was pro-urban.

Although the Janata Dal (S)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition claimed to be pro-farmer, it had no concern for the rural people and the decision against considering the marks scored by students in pre-university examination would hamper the future of rural students.

He said that he would support the Congress, which was planning to launch an agitation to oppose the Bill.

He won the election from the South Teachers' Constituency, as an independent candidate, defeating candidates of major political parties.

He clarified that he had no intention of joining any political party in the near future and he would concentrate on strengthening Teachers' Forum.

Extension opposed

Taking exception to the extension of term of Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka State Open University Sudha Rao, he said he would raise the issue in the Legislative Council and fight against the decision of the Government. Her term had been extended for political reasons and she had acted against the interest of teachers, he alleged.

Expressing his gratitude to teachers who helped him defeat candidates of major political parties, he said that he would release 50 per cent of the grant under Legislators Area Development Fund for building classrooms and compounds to schools.

Mr. Gowda attributed his success to the support extended by dedicated workers of Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) parties. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) played a major role in his victory, he said.

Describing his victory as a milestone in the political history, he said that he would address various issues of teachers in aided and unaided institutions, especially in sanctioning aid to unaided institutions.

Trimester system opposed

His primary intention was to scrap the trimester system and force the Government to introduce English from the first standard.

He would make efforts to release salary of teachers of aided pre-university colleges, which was not paid in four months and increase the honorarium of guest lectures from the existing Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 5,000, setting the anomalies in the pay structure of assistant teachers of high schools and extending all facilities for aided and unaided institutions, which were being given to government schools, he added.
