Bangalore: Minister for Medical Education V.S. Acharya has said that the Government proposed to develop a "Health City" in Bangalore as part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and the Government would earmark 100 acres of land for it. Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of the Surgeon's Day celebrations organised by the Surgical Society of Bangalore here on Sunday, Dr. Acharya said of the Rs. 20,000 crore allocated to the development of Bangalore under the JNNURM project, over Rs. 100 crore would be used for the "Health City" project, to promote the city as a healthcare destination. Dr. Acharya said the Government had received a letter from the Union Government confirming the allocation of Rs. 100 crore to the State for upgrading Bangalore Medical College and the five teaching hospitals affiliated to it, to the standard of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Blueprint for the work would be ready in 15 days.
