GO on minority seats to be amended

HYDERABAD: Amending an earlier order, the Government has decided to fill unfilled seats in minority educational institutions with candidates belonging to other minority communities after absorbing those from the respective minority as per the list. Mohd. Shafiquzzaman, principal secretary, Minorities Welfare, said in a press release on Saturday that this had been done keeping in view the genuine meritorious candidates belonging to other minority communities. Five persons electrocuted

Srikakulam: Three persons -- Kinthali Narasimhulu (55), his wife Chinnammi (50) and mother Mallamma of Konadalayyapeta village in Jalumru mandal -- were electrocuted when they came in contact with a live wire on Saturday night. Chinnammi had first come in contact with the wire when she tried to switch on a light in the kitchen. Narsimhulu and Mallamma tried to save her and were also electrocuted in the process. Two masons were killed in a similar incident in Nimmavanipeta of Etcherla mandal on Saturday morning. Special Correspondent

Tribals' plea for relaxation in DSC

HYDERABAD: AP Scheduled Tribes Employees' Association has appealed to the administration to accept applications for DSC 2006 from untrained tribals and give relaxation to them for filling all the reserved posts. E. Anjaneyulu, president and P.V. Ramana, general secretary, while issuing the appeal in a statement here wanted the Government to instruct District Collectors to appoint persons after verifying the ST certificates with Commissioner of Tribal Welfare. They said a special cell has been created in the Directorate of Tribal Welfare to prevent non-tribals from getting admission in professional courses using bogus caste certificates. Police unearth three landmines

KADAPA: Tsundupalle police unearthed three powerful landmines put up along the roadside on Madhavaram-Kuruvapalle route in Tsundupalle mandal on Sunday. Each of the landmine had a 5 kg propensity and seemed to have been placed by CPI (Maoists) about a year ago on the rural route, Kadapa Superintendent of Police Y. Nagi Reddy told newsmen at Tsundupalle police station. Mr. Nagi Reddy inspected the place where the landmines were detected and removed, after villagers tipped off the police on spotting electric wires on the ground. The powerful landmines were capable of blowing up a heavy vehicle such as a bus or lorry, Kadapa OSD (Operations) A.S. C. Wesley said. Maoists might have planted the landmines to target police officials after warranting their visit by committing an offence, he said. The SP lauded Tsundupalle police for unearthing landmines. Six selected for drug inspector posts

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission has provisionally selected six candidates for the post of drugs inspector in AP Drug Control Administration Service on the basis of results of written and oral tests conducted this year. A press release said selection was subject to the candidates' antecedents being found suitable after an enquiry, physical fitness and production of original certificates. Special Correspondent

TDP supporters dump ballot box into well

TIRUPATI: In a major post-poll incident, in Panamala village in Vedurukuppam mandal, TDP supporters allegedly stopped a bus carrying ballot boxes belonging to various polling stations and took away one of them, which was dumped into a nearby well. The motivation for their action is not immediately known. - Special Correspondent.

Brahmotsavam at Sowmyanatha temple

KADAPA: Brahmotsavam will be performed at Sri Sowmyanatha Swamy temple at Nandalur from July 4 to 13. Arrangements are being made for the convenience of thousands of devotees expected to visit the temple for Kalyanotsavam of Sri Sowmyanatha Swamy with his consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi on July 11 and Rathotsavam on July 12, according to a statement. The State Government has sent `mutyala thalambralu' for the kalyanotsavam. - Staff Reporter

1,200 personnel for counting in Kadapa

KADAPA: Some 1,200 have been deputed for counting of votes on July 4 for 47 ZPTCs and 426 MPTCs that went to polls on June 28, District Collector M.T. Krishna Babu said on Sunday. Speaking to newsmen after inspecting a counting centre at the Government Polytehnic at Proddatur for Proddatur, Chapadu, Rajupalem, Mydukur and Duvvur mandals, he said the contestants and their counting agents would be apprised of Election Commission guidelines at a meeting.- Staff Reporter

17 held for allegedly gambling

NALGONDA: The town police on Sunday raided two lodges and arrested 17 persons on the charge of resorting to gambling, according to Inspector Vijaypual. On a tip off, a police party raided the lodge and nabbed seven persons.- Staff Reporter
