Uttar Pradesh
Special Correspondent
Lucknow: The Congress does not rule out the possibility of forming a joint front with small parties in Uttar Pradesh for next year's Assembly elections. An indication to this effect was given by the president of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee, Salman Khurshid. Mr Khurshid told newsmen on Sunday that his party supported the endeavour of the new political forces and small parties which had emerged against Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav. The U.P. Congress president said though the prospects of forging a electoral alliance with them has not been discussed yet, the Congress was not averse to the idea of a common platform with small parties. Mr Khurshid said recently the Congress and Samaanta Dal had addressed a rally together and more such political programmes with other parties would be held later. He felt that a concerted effort was needed against the ruling party in the State. As regards forging ties with the Jan Morcha , he said it was for the party's central leadership to hold negotiations with V.P. Singh and Raj Babbar. Giving details of the party's programme of political action in the State, Mr Khurshid said workers' meetings and divisional conventions would be held throughout the State from July to September. He said the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi would also address a few meetings. The programme, he said, would begin from the Bundelkhand region where workers' meetings would be held on July 11 and 12. Thereafter, similar programmes would be held in Purvanchal, western U.P. and other regions of the State, Mr Khurshid added. The UPCC president said the Congress party's final `chargesheet' against Mr Yadav's misrule would be released at 16 places on July 15 and 16. Mr Khurshid said a film on Mulayam rule titled, " UP Nama- Kya Khoya Kya Paaya'', would also be screened in different parts of the State in an effort to build up public opinion against the Samajwadi Party Government. He said the first meeting of the new district and city unit presidents would be held in Lucknow on July 8. Meanwhile, the leader of Congress Legislature Party, Pramod Tewari, has accused the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister of honouring several RSS activists as Emergency detenus on June 26. He alleged that the honour list contained the names of several RSS activists who were actively involved in the demolition of the Babri mosque on December 6, 1992.
