Chennai Telephones issued the previous edition of Telephone Directory to customers in 2003, with corrections up to December 31, 2002. There were lots of additions and deletions after that and it is difficult to locate the correct number. It is high time a new directory is published.
S. Divya,
Fat-free milk is welcome The introduction of Aavin Diet, with 2% fat, compared to 3% earlier, is welcome. Aavin skimmed milk powder, which is absolutely fat free, is ideal for controlling cholesterol. But mixing it with water to get the right mix is cumbersome. Aavin should launch fate-free milk sachets. If this is not feasible, 1% liquid milk, which is popular in the U.S, will be a boon, especially for cardiac patients. Fatless table butter, cheese and paneer should also be marketed.
Arcot Easwaran,
Provide parking bays for buses The portion of Sardar Patel Road near the entrance to KendriyaVidyalaya, CLRI, Adyar, on the one side and the Regional Labour Institute on the other, is too narrow to handle the peak-hour traffic. Three MTC bus stops on both sides, located close to each other, aggravate the chaos with buses stopping almost on the middle of the road, blocking other traffic. Exclusive parking bays for buses on both sides will ease the traffic snarls. CLRI and RLI should have no objection to parting with a piece of their land for this purpose in larger public interest. Will authorities consider this suggestion?
K. R. Hema,
Road only in name The feeder road, Bharatha Matha Street, from East Tambaram to Sanatorium Railway Station, is in bad state and unfit for travel for the past four years. The `annual maintenance' is done in February-March. Blue metal is stored from August onwards on either side of the road, inconveniencing pedestrians. The gravel stored in August is levelled using road rollers, loose soil spread and tar superficially sprayed. In the first rain, everything is washed away and only the granite remains!
B. Sandhya,
Solve voltage problem I am residing at Thirupathi Nagar, Kolathur, since 1989. It comes under Corporation Division No. 62. For the past one month, the area is experiencing frequent power cut and low voltage. Students and senior citizens are worst hit. I request the EB authorities to rectify the problem immediately by installing, if necessary, additional transformers. I hope the new government will take immediate action.
N. Narayanan,
Mini-bus service Over 1,000 families reside in areas between Kamarajapuram to Hasthinapuram, a stretch of 4-5 km, and have to depend on two-wheelers and autos to reach the main road at Kamarajapuram for taking a bus to the city. With fuel price skyrocketing, most of the middle class residents are finding two-wheelers an expensive proposition. They prefer to walk or ride a bicycle, both time-consuming ventures. It takes 15-20 minutes to reach the main road. Autorickshaws plying in the area demand between Rs. 30-50 to cover the stretch. It will be of great help if the authorities introduced mini-bus services in this area.
K, Subramanyam,
Erratic water supply A report in your columns on June 13 mentions that piped water is supplied to houses only once a week or once in 10 days in the Cholavaram Nagar under Pammal Municipality. The water comes mixed with mud. Municipal authorities have ignored the matter despite several complaints from welfare associations.
R.K. Panicker,
Fly-over, a vital need Traffic on Sterling Road junction is chaotic throughout the day. People going towards the Chetpet bridge have to take College Road and Haddows Road to reach Gemini. The need of the hour is a fly-over, with three branches; one towards Sterling Road, the second towards College Road and the third towards Nungambakkam High Road (now M.G.Road). The authorities should do the needful.
K. Pradeep,
Water problem solved Drinking water is supplied once in eight to ten days in Chitlapakkam. In Muthulakshmi Nagar, for quite some time, houses on Adhiaman Street., Kambar St., Advocate Janakiraman St. & Muthulakshmi St were not receiving the Palar water. This was brought to the attention of the Chitlapakkam special village panchayat president on June 16. Last week, necessary action was taken and 2 to 3 metres of underground pipes were replaced on Rajiv Gandhi St and Kambar St. junction. The water supply was resumed on June 23. I thank the panchayat president and the staff for their prompt action.
L. Sundararaman
Shift or close TASMAC shop We request the Chief Minister to take steps to shift/relocate or close the TASMAC wine shop on Suryaprakasam Street, Krishnapuram (Ward No. 13), Ambattur, a prime residential area, as it has been causing law and order problems. Petitions to officials have not produced results. The residents had opposed the shop located on the entrance to Suryaprakasam Street. Even street lights are being short-circuited to help the shop. Some of the residents who objected were assaulted and the women, threatened. Cannot the authorities check the location of a shop, before issuing the licence?
G. Ganapathy,
Widen road soon
This refers to the report `Residents despair as traffic chaos reigns on T.H.R. Road' published on June 26. It highlighted the traffic woes being faced by the people of North Chennai, who are always neglected by the party in power. Widening of T.H. Road will be the main solution. Though the previous regime tried to widen the road by demolishing some buildings beginning from Kaladipet, the work was stopped abruptly. The encroachments should be removed without further delay. This will help reduce traffic problems. To pave the way for smooth traffic on this road, an alternative/parallel road will be helpful. Erukanchery High Road and Tondiarpet High Road, which are in bad shape, could be relaid. If they are maintained well, most of the vehicles from Manali, Minjur and Ponery to Chennai Central will avoid T.H. Road. There exists a road to T.H. Road from New Washermanpet up to the Ennore expressway, but it is unusable even in summer, not to speak of monsoon days.
V. R. Shankar,
Power cut, a daily affair Ekkattuthangal, close to the Guindy industrial area, has hundreds of small-scale industrial units. Now textile and leather garment companies and corporate entities are setting up base here and co-exist with thickly populated residential localities. Low capacity transformers have ensured that power cut is routine. This affects production besides causing problems to the residents. The EB authorities should look into the matter.
T. Kanakasabai,
Open dispensary The Union Ministry of Health should open a C.G.H.S. dispensary at Tambaram to cater for Central employees and pensioners residing in East Tambaram, West Tambaram, Selaiyur, Perungalathur, as well as Sembakkam. The private hospitals are demanding huge sums for treatment and performing various operations.
