CHENNAI : Five students from the West Saidapet Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School on Jones Road have so far "talked" their way to Japan. The students come from poor families, some from broken homes. Many students depend on the school's noon meal scheme programme. Every year since 2000, the students have participated and won the oratorical competition conducted by ABK-AOTS Dosokai, an organisation teaching Japanese language in Chennai. The school lost out to the nearby boys' school in 2005 but won again in 2006. The girls have made their school proud in academics too. Every year at least 10 students are admitted to engineering colleges. Two years ago a student, Chitra, became the first girl to be admitted to a Government Medical College. The then Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, funded her education. Chitra is in her second year M.B.B.S., at Chengalpet Medical College. This year, N.S. Shanmugapriya, who scored 92.8 per cent in standard XII and 289.6 marks in the medical entrance examination, hopes to get into Kilpauk Medical College or the Chengalpet Medical College. Shanmugapriya's mother, R. Parameshwari, works as an assistant in Tamil Nadu Electricity Board's Mount Road office.
