44 students given scholarship

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Mayor Mumtaz Begum on Sunday called upon private organisations to adopt government-run Urdu schools and help in their overall development.

Speaking after giving away scholarships sponsored by the Al-Hakeem Foundation for Science and Humanities to 44 students pursuing higher education and professional courses, the Mayor expressed concern over the increasing number of dropouts in Urdu schools.

"The increasing dropout rate is not because of lack of infrastructure or other facilities. It is because these schools do not have good teachers," she said.

Pointing out that private organisations have been sponsoring scholarships of students for higher studies, the Mayor said: "It is difficult for students from the economically weaker sections to go to even high schools. They need funding at the elementary level. I would like to urge these organisations to also sponsor the studies of poor students at the primary level."

She appreciated the efforts of founder of Al-Hakeem Foundation for Science and Humanities Arifulla Khan for sponsoring the scholarships. "More people should come forward to help needy students," she said.
