Set up new airport away from city, says Vijayakanth
Staff reporter
Chennai:
Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam President Vijayakanth has urged the state government to identify land for the new airport in Chennai in a location where local residents would not be affected.
In a statement here on Sunday, Mr. Vijayakanth said that the present expansion plans would affect residents of Cowl Bazaar, Pozhichallur, Pammal and Anakaputhur, where about 40,000 families live.
The DMDK leader said that it was "shocking and distressing" to hear that the Tamil Nadu government planned to offer land in these residential localities for the Centre's proposed project.
Even if compensation was offered, the residents would not be able to regain their standard of living. The State could consider setting up the airport away from the city, Mr. Vijayakanth said.
