BANGALORE: Minister for Health and Family Welfare, R. Ashok, on Saturday inaugurated the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) park in Banashankari II Stage here and urged the public to protect such parks.

Stressing the need to develop more parks to protect the environment, Mr. Ashok said the Government would not harm the lakes and every effort would be made to develop more lakes and parks in Bangalore.

He said floods were caused due to destruction of lakes and asked the BMP to develop and retain existing lakes in the city to prevent floods in Bangalore.

The Minister later distributed medicinal plants to the public and felicitated former Minister B.K. Chandrashekar and litterateur G.S. Shivarudrappa.

Prof. Chandrashekar said there were 20,000 lakes in the Old Mysore area but today's Bangalore had only a few lakes.

People should cooperate with the BMP and help them in keeping the city clean and green, he said. Mayor Mumtaz Begum was present on the occasion.

The park, named Banashankari Brindavana, is being developed on two-and-a-half acres on an estimated cost of Rs. 62 lakh, informed BMP corporator A.H. Basavaraju.

The corporation also proposed to build an indoor stadium and a swimming pool in the area. Medical cheques, old age pensions, equipment for the disabled were also distributed on the occasion.

The BMP also proposed to build ornamental classic tile pathways, gazebo, children's play equipment and install a fountain.
