Bangalore: Minister for Medical Education V.S. Acharya has said that the Government proposed to develop a "Health City" in Bangalore as part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and the Government would earmark 100 acres of land for it. Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of the Surgeon's Day celebrations organised by the Surgical Society of Bangalore here on Sunday, Dr. Acharya said of the Rs. 20,000 crore allocated to the development of Bangalore under the JNNURM project, over Rs. 100 crore would be used for the "Health City" project, to promote the city as a healthcare destination. Dr. Acharya said the Government had received a letter from the Union Government confirming the allocation of Rs. 100 crore to the State for upgrading Bangalore Medical College and the five teaching hospitals affiliated to it, to the standard of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The blueprint for the work would be ready in 15 days, he said. He said instead of the Rs. 20 crore additional allocation to be made by the Government for this project, Rs. 50 crore would be given, and apart from BMC, the Government Dental College and Government Nursing College would be upgraded. The work would be finished in three years, he said. K.S. Gopinath, president of the Association of Surgeons of India, said the association was working on a uniform model and curriculum for surgical education that could be adopted in all medical institutions across India. S.M. Bose, former Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery, PGI, Chandigarh, delivered the "B.N. Balakrishna Rao Memorial Oration" lecture. C.S. Rajan, president of the Surgical Society of Bangalore, was present.
