This Day That Age
Two Australians, L.A. Hoad and K.R. Rosewall, seeded No.1 and No.2, and two Americans, H. Richardson and V. Seixas, seeded No.6 and No.8 respectively, qualified for the penultimate round of men's singles in the All-England Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon on July 2. Hoad was well extended by M.J. Anderson, his compatriot, to four sets while Rosewall had the easiest quarter-final eliminating U. Schmidt in straight sets. N.G. Fraser of Australia also took Richardson to the fourth set. Seixas defeated J. Morris in three sets. Though Australia had a large share of the laurels in world tennis in recent years, it is only the second time in 11 post-war Wimbledons that it has two men among the last four. Rosewall reached the final in 1954, the year Drobny achieved his cherished ambition. Hoad, though potentially the greatest amateur player in the world, has yet to reach a singles final here. Seixas, the only former champion who appears in the semi-final for the third time, is bidding strongly to become the first man since the war to win the title twice.
