dated July 4, 1956: Commonwealth and China

The Commonwealth's future relationship with China and the Formosa situation dominated the three-hour session of the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Conference in London on July 2. The discussion on China was more in the nature of a review than an attempt to find solutions to questions such as admission of the Peking Government to UN, trade with Mainland China and the Formosa situation. Solution of these problems in the prevailing circumstances is regarded as remote till the American Presidential elections in November. Countries like Canada which appeared inclined to normalise relations with People's China would obviously not depart from the "North American stand" while countries like Australia and South Africa were, if anything, more anti-Communist than the US and would look askance at any "softening" of American attitude towards Peking. In this situation, the British Prime Minister, Sir Anthony Eden, is following a middle course trying to reconcile the two opposing points of view represented by India at one end, which is pressing for speedy admission of China to the UN and recognition in other ways of her place in the comity of nations, and the US at the other. The problem of Formosa is considered even more difficult than that of mere recognition or admission of China to the UN.
