Plea to postpone Cricket World Cup dismissed
Legal Correspondent
New Delhi:
The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed at the admission stage a petition filed by a Vidharba Cricket Association member, seeking a direction to reschedule the World Cup 2007 to be held in West Indies in March/April 2007.
A Bench consisting of Justices K. G. Balakrishnan and D. K. Jain dismissed the petition filed by Uma Kant Agnihotri contending that the schedule clashed with the dates of school and college exams in India. When the Bench was not inclined to entertain the petition, counsel for the petitioner sought its withdrawal.
The petitioner said that in view of the cricket craze, studies of students would be affected if the World Cup was held as per the present programme. He sought a direction to the BCCI to approach the ICC for changing the dates to anytime after April 2007.
