Bangalore: Paying guest accommodation no longer finds much favour with single young working men. For those earning high salaries like the call centre/ BPO sector staff, it is "shared apartments." The apartments are mostly located in places in and around Marathalli, Outer Ring Road, Koramangala and Bannerghatta Road and are within easy driving distance of the `IT Corridor.' Even a rent of Rs. 10,000 does not mean much when it is shared among five or six young men. What with music systems, TV and microwave ovens and all, the electricity bills may be high but are again evenly shared. Prakash from Chennai, who shares a two-bed room apartment with four others, finds the sofa-cum-bed in the living-dining area comfortable enough. "Each of us has a latch key and need not ring the bell. Those working on night shifts are given the bedroom farthest from the entrance door so that they can rest undisturbed. We also make or order lunch for them to be delivered later," he explains. "Saleem from Tirunelveli is the best cook among us, but we help him with washing and clearing the table or fetching stuff from the market. Cooking is mostly confined to weekends," says Prakash. Laundering is by turns on the commonly purchased washing machine and ironing is done by the "iron wallah" down the street. Within the apartment too certain "dress codes" have been set by mutual consent. No boxer shorts and under vests when a visitor, especially that of the opposite gender, drops in.
