COIMBATORE: Adolescents are subjected to a lot of stress in their years of growing up. In order to train them in life skills, Lions Clubs International has come out with `Lions Quest,' a skill development workshop for teachers. The three-day workshop would include training in methods to help students handle stress in an effective way. "The programme aims to develop qualities such as discipline, responsibility and good judgement," said R. Muthiyalu, Project Co-ordinator. After attending the workshop, the teachers could conduct the programme in their schools, one hour a week. At the workshop, they are provided with special teaching materials, which would in turn be issued to students in their schools. The teachers are also advised to conduct regular meetings with the parents in which the problems faced by children and the progress they make could be discussed. The programme is not just for teachers. Counsellors, health educators, other professionals and parents too could participate. However, the schools in the city have not really opened up to the concept, Mr. Muthiyalu observes. "Instead of having moral science classes, students could be involved in this kind of an interactive programme with lots of fun-filled games. They will internalise the lessons better in this way," he said. The workshops also encourage teachers and community members to become part of the children's education process. Interested schools could contact Mr. R.Muthiyalu : 98940-56777.
