Seven killed in Sri Lankan violence

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: At least seven persons were killed and several injured in two separate claymore attacks allegedly carried out by Tamil Tigers on Monday.

The military reported three incidents of violence by the Tigers. Quoting Trincomalee police sources, TamilNet said a soldier, a home guard, a constable, a police sergeant and a civilian were killed when a claymore mine exploded at Anuradhapura junction.

It said the LTTE cadres wearing Army uniforms fired at the Army point in Vavuniya early Monday and the exchange lasted for about 10 minutes. The Army later recovered the body of a suspected LTTE cadre. The military said many families in Batticaloa had begun to vacate their homes fearing conscription of their minor children by the Tamil Tigers.

It said those displaced told the security forces that the LTTE men were forcing them to join compulsory training designed to fight the security forces.
