NAMAKKAL: Those who visit the farmers' market here on Sundays can never miss the gory sight of dead rabbits and other animals placed in rows on the roadside. A group of `narikuravas' would nonchalantly peel their skins right before your eyes. A pair of peeled hares is priced at Rs. 300. These animals are being brought from the foothills of Kolli Hills. They will be either shot or ensnared in the forests. A senior forest official told The Hindu that hunting these animals was prohibited. Since the `narikuravas' were given gun licences they indulged in this act. "Despite our warnings they continue to do this. Stringent action is needed to curb this," said an animal watcher.
