Tariff sops on goods from Pakistan
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
The Customs Department has issued a series of notifications (No. 67 onwards) dated June 30, 2006, giving effect to specified tariff concessions on goods imported from Pakistan and Sri Lanka as also Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives and Nepal. The concessional rates under the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) are higher for the latter four, which fall in the category of least developed countries.
The department has also notified negative lists (that is, items not eligible to the benefits of the agreement).
The concessional rates (ad valorem or specific, as the case may be) will be applicable in accordance with the Rules of Determination of Origin of Goods (or minimum value addition norms) under the SAFTA agreement (published in the non-tariff notification No. 75 dated June 30, 2006).
