Kidambi loses again

NEW DELHI: S. Kidambi's second successive loss marked a day of mixed fortunes for the Indians in the seventh round of the Sort Open International chess tournament at Sort, Spain, on Sunday.

Abhijeet Gupta, seeded 17, headed the Indian challenge in the joint fifth spot with five points. Top seed Julio Granda Zuniga of Peru led the field with six points.

The results (involving Indians): Seventh round: Artur Kogan (Isr, 5.5) bt S. Kidambi (4.5); Mathias Roeder (Ger, 5) drew with Abhijeet Gupta (5); Jesus Baron Rodriguez (Esp, 4.5) bt Tania Sachdev (3.5); Eesha Karavade (3.5) lost to Heikki Westernen (Fin, 4.5); Vishal Sareen (4.5) bt Karolina Ortiz (Col, 3.5); Sopiko Guramishvili (Geo, 3.5) lost to G. N. Gopal (4.5); Abhyudaya Rajpurohit (4) bt Lazaro Lerenzo De Le Riva (Esp, 3); Gurpreet Pal Singh (3) drew with Sahaj Grover (3.5); Kruttika Nadig (3.5) bt Josep Solsona Manonelles (2.5).
