Da Silva to coach East Bengal

Principal Correspondent

Kolkata: Former National Football League champion Kingfisher East Bengal has drafted in the services of a senior coach from Brazil in a bid to brighten its prospects in the coming season. According to club secretary Kalyan Majumdar, the new coach, sixty-year-old Roberto Pereira da Silva from Rio de Janeiro, will take charge of the team from July 10.

Having lost the race for the National club championships for two successive seasons, the city giant replaced its Belgian coach Philippe de Ridder and sought to revive its fortunes by clinging to the famed land of Samba.

Da Silva, who is a qualified in physical education instructor and holds a degree in coaching from Cologne University, has a long career as a coach. He had coached the reputed Brazilian side Vasco da Gama and spent a long time teaching in the Brazilian Football Academy.

He also coached the Singapore National side from 1996 to 1998 and a host of middle-eastern clubs like Al Saad (Qatar) and Al Aind (UAE) among others.
