    RALLY: The winning DPA candidates in the Pondicherry civic elections take out a rally in Pondicherry on Monday.

    Pondicherry: The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) candidate R. Prebavathy has been elected as chairperson of the Karaikal Municipal council, to which elections were held on June 24.

    The counting of votes polled in the region was taken up on Monday at Karaikal. Official sources here told newsmen that the DMDK candidate defeated her immediate Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate U. Bhuvaneswari by a margin of 3,010 votes. While Prebavathy polled 14,815 votes, her DMK rival polled 11,835 votes.

    The results declared for all the 18 wards showed wins for the Congress in seven wards, the DMK in five, DMDK in two, with the Independents and others annexing the remaining four wards.

    The Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) comprising the ruling Congress, DMK and a few other parties was ahead in the civic polls in Pondicherry, the results of which were trickling in on Monday.

    The ruling Congress emerged victorious in Yanam, which has a municipality.

    The party nominee Gidla Chandra Rao won the chairman's election in Yanam defeating his immediate Independent rival Ponugumatala Vishnumurthy.

    According to official sources in Pondicherry, Mr. Chandra Rao polled 13,513 votes while Mr. Vishnumurthy polled 3,389 votes.

    Yanam council

    The Yanam municipal council has a total of 10 wards. The Congress has won nine wards (including the two seats from where the party nominees were declared elected unopposed during the scrutiny of papers).

    One seat, Kanakalapeta, was won by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) candidate Kavala Sathiraju according to official sources.

    In the Mahe region, the ruling Congress annexed the post of chairman with its candidate Ramesh Parambath polling 11,242 votes, against his immediate CPI(M) rival, advocate T. Ashok Kumar's 8,640 votes in the four cornered contest, the sources said.

    Details of the poll results of the 15 municipal councillor wards in Mahe were not available immediately.

    In the Pondicherry municipal polls the DMK candidate Dr B. Sridevi was leading over her immediate AIADMK candidate S. Tamilselvi by over 13,590 votes at the end of the third round of counting.

    The Pondicherry municipality has a total of 42 wards. Results for 31 wards were available in the evening, with the Democratic Progressive alliance winning a combined tally of fourteen seats.

    Independents were elected from nine wards, while the PMC emerged victorious in five. The AIADMK annexed three wards.

    Counting of votes relating to the remaining 11 wards is in progress and the results are still awaited.

    In the Oulgaret municipal poll, the Congress nominee N.S.J. Jayabal was leading in chairman elections.

    The results of 13 out of 33 wards were declared on Monday. The highlight of the results was that the DMK annexed six wards, and the Congress returned won four.

    Independents and others won the remaining three.
