Kozhikode: Calicut University Vice-Chancellor Syed Iqbal Hasnain on Monday urged the State Government to order a probe by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau into the allegation that Hazarath Beevi was recently appointed editorial assistant through illegal means and that she had obtained money from several candidates. Dr. Hasnain used the powers of the university Syndicate in demanding an inquiry on the basis of reports and written complaints from various organisations. Earlier, the university authorities had refuted the allegations of irregularity in the appointment of the editorial assistant. The service of an editorial assistant was necessitated for expanding the activities of the university website and the starting of the English news magazine Calicut University News. The university decided to appoint a person on contract basis since the post was not permanent. The requisite qualification was proficiency in English language and experience in the field of journalism. Based on the bio-data received, the university decided to appoint Hazarath Beevi on contract basis. In her bio-data she had mentioned that she had studied modern journalism and communication as options in her B.A. Philosophy degree course, acquired a diploma in journalism and public relations and had experience in public relations at two firms in Singapore and Chennai. Although she was given an appointment order, she was not permitted to join since she did not submit certificates pertaining to her age and qualifications she had stated in her bio-data. Her appointment was later cancelled after the university authorities received a call from a bank in Kochi that she had applied for a loan using a forged identity card. Ms. Hazarath did not engage in the job of editorial assistant for a single day and had not obtained any wages from the university, according to an official press release.
