Lok Satta plans to launch new party

Special Correspondent

Emphasis on a new political culture that empowers people

  • Apex committee releases discussion paper
  • No timeframe fixed for launch of the new party

HYDERABAD: Lok Satta, a voluntary organisation working for good governance and electoral reforms, is firming up plans for launching a new political party in the State.

As a prelude, Lok Satta apex committee that met here on Sunday released a discussion paper highlighting the current state of affairs and the need to usher in a new political culture that aims at empowering the people. The apex committee opined that the new political culture of `genuine politics' could be ushered in only by the formation of a "truly new political party". Such a party must be focussed not on the "distorted" and "unnatural" game of capturing power, but on transforming the very landscape of politics. However, it did not fix any timeframe for the launch of the new political outfit. Addressing a press conference, Lok Satta national coordinator N. Jayaprakash Narayan said the organisation wanted to bring those who had distanced themselves from political process to come together.

"We want all those willing to have an alternative to the existing system to come forward and discuss the issue in the coming weeks. If the people think they have an option for the political party, it becomes an obligation," he said. Once a decision of forming a political party was announced, it would have a national outlook with clear policy guidelines on all issues confronting the people. Lok Satta was not of the view that all politicians were corrupt as there were people in political parties who were seeking a change.
