MUMBAI: Heavy rains lashed the city for the third consecutive day, throwing normal life out of gear on Monday. Trains on the western, central and harbour lines were suspended for sometime and traffic slowed down in several parts of the city. Low-lying areas in the city were flooded. Unlike on July 26, 2005, when the residents were caught off-guard by heavy rains, authorities sent out warnings on radio and through mobile phones. As a result, many offices closed earlier, allowing people to return home before the situation worsened. Schools and colleges were advised by the authorities to close early depending on their location. Since Sunday night, the suburbs received more rain than South Mumbai. The Met Office recorded 215 mm in Colaba till 5.30 p.m. and 240 mm at Santacruz. The forecast says heavy to very rain is likely to continue, there could be one or two spells of extremely heavy showers accompanied by strong wind in parts of the city and its suburbs. Three persons died in two incidents of drowning in the city since Sunday. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporationspokesperson Dadasaheb Shivjatak said water from the subways had been pumped out and traffic had returned to normal by evening.
Depression crosses Orissa
UNI reports from Visakhapatnam: The deep depression over the north Bay of Bengal had moved westwards and crossed the Orissa coast between Paradeep and Chandabali on Sunday night. The system is likely to move in a westerly direction. Heavy rain is likely at most places of Orissa and north coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 48 hours.
