BAD WEATHER: Thunderclouds forming over Bhubaneswar horizon due to the depression over Orissa coast.

Rayagada (Orissa): Heavy and incessant rains in south Orissa claimed at least one life while floods in two major rivers inundated large areas, disrupting railway traffic, official sources said on Monday.

The flooded Vamsadhara river had inundated large areas of Rayagada district while a 10-year-old boy was washed away at Sanyasipur village under Padmapur block of the district, they said.

Landslides at two places had affected train services while a portion of the railway track between Theruvali and Kalyansinghpur stations had been washed away this morning.

Reports said that about six feet of water was flowing over the railway track at the place where the damage had occurred. As the heavy rains continued, huge boulders rolled down on the railway track from nearby hills at Leliguma on the Tikiri-Rayagada line and near Majhighariani temple on the outskirts of the Rayagada town last night, railway sources said.

The Bokaro-Alleppey Express train had been detained at Theruvali while the Koraput-Howrah Samaleswari Express and Koraput-Visakhapatnam DMU had been cancelled for the day, they said.

Sultry weather

Even as several areas in Uttar Pradesh were lashed by rainfall, people in other areas are still reeling under sultry weather. Met office said here on Monday, Gorakhpur, Varanasi and Faizabad divisions received showers in the last 24 hours.

Some areas of Lucknow, Allahabad and Kanpur also received thundershowers. Ayodhya recorded 3 mm rainfall.

District collectors alerted

Heavy rains continued to lash Chhattisgarh for the second consecutive day on Monday as the authorities put all 16 districts on high alert.

The depression has crossed the Orissa coast because of which there could be heavy rainfall in the State in the next 48 hours, State Relief Commissioner Dr Alok Shukla said.

Bordering areas of Orissa, Gariabandh received 185 mm rainfall.
