For once, the district administration is not likely to be caught napping. Marking a radical departure from the knee-jerk reaction that has characterised its response to natural disasters, the official machinery has gone into overdrive to prepare itself for relief and rehabilitation during the monsoon period. A temporary thatched shelter has been constructed at Shanghumughom to house families that are likely to be displaced from the coastal areas as the tidal action intensifies. Efforts are on to provide electricity connection and sanitation facilities in the shelter. Revenue officials have been kept on alert and review meetings held almost on a daily basis. The involvement of MLAs and people's representatives has added momentum to the exercise in preparedness. "We are monitoring the situation. Families will be relocated from vulnerable areas if the need arises," says a key revenue official. Residents in the coastal areas, who are used to a tardy response from the administration, are now wondering what has spurred the burst of activity.
